Cairo Jazz Festival

It was a real treat to be invited to play at the Cairo Jazz Festival with Eduardo Niebla and his brother Salvador Niebla (drums).

What a warm welcome and an energetic, electric atmostphere! It's amazing to see people coming together and celebrating music in spite of recent difficulties. Jazz is such an all-inclusive, joyful and democratic art form and I can't think of a better soundtrack for modern Egypt than this festival. Local and international, traditional and modern music in a blend that's all the richer for its diversity. Hope it goes from strength to strength!

I wanted to tell you about some really exciting new guitar pieces that are being written for me at the moment by some outstanding musicians:

Richard Lannoy is writing a Sonatina for solo guitar

Tim Garland is writing a set of Caprices to go alongside his 'Caprice No. 1', which I was honoured to perform as part of Tim's 'Momentum 2010' concert at LSO St Luke's, accompanied by Neil Percy (percussion)

Chris Gander is writing a large cycle of pieces based on times of day
